Second-Time Wedding Series: The Dress

Tips to help you pick the perfect second-time wedding dress.

Chances are, if you are planning your second wedding, people are telling you all the do’s and don’ts, and you feel more overwhelmed now than you did the first time around. So, take a deep breath, and relax. The good news is, apart only from inviting your first husband or wife, you can pretty much do whatever you want on your second-time wedding.

Whether you want to have the huge wedding extravaganza party you couldn’t afford the first time, or you want to keep it simple and intimate, it is completely up to you. And this rule is no different when it comes to second-time wedding dresses.

The Style

When shopping for your new wedding gown, we suggest that you keep your wedding style in mind, as you wouldn’t want to wear a very formal dress to a beach or waterside wedding, but we don’t believe there are rules in terms of length, colours, or anything else.

Gone are the days when white gowns were a symbol of purity and virginity. Nowadays they represent joy, and are not only acceptable, but encouraged at second weddings.

We would probably recommend picking something other than a princess gown, as these are usually the styles that become dated quickly. We suggest more classic styles that compliment your figure and show off your personality, but we are all for a little bit of sex appeal – you should feel sexy and beautiful on your wedding day, whether it’s your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th.

The Budget

Second-time brides usually have a bigger budget than they did the first time around, and as it is a lot less common for parents to chip in on second weddings, they don’t need to accommodate for third parties’ opinions and requests. But we recommend doing some research and having a set budget in mind.

Not only will it help you keep track of your costs and plan your expenses ahead of time, having a budget for your dress also helps you with your dress selection. If you set a budget of $1000 to $1500, you instantly have a selection bracket that will not include every single dress in the shop.

The Entourage

While you definitely want to bring someone with you for an honest second opinion, huge groups of friends and family members bring unnecessary drama that you’ve probably already had to deal with when planning your first wedding.

We recommend that you bring a close friend, mother, sister, or teenage child to help, but not all of them at once. Make sure you have someone who will be honest and tell you if a dress doesn’t look great.

Finally, we recommend you wear appropriate underwear when trying on dresses, so you can see exactly what the dress will look like on your big day.
